Governor Cooper Announces $253 Million in Funding for Drinking Water Projects

Subsidies to Support Vital Infrastructure Upgrades Statewide

July 21, 2024 | 3:10 PM EDT | 3 min read

Governor Roy Cooper today announced that communities across North Carolina will receive over $253 million in grants to enhance drinking water infrastructure. These funds will support a range of projects, including pipeline upgrades, new treatment facilities, and water quality monitoring systems.

"Access to clean, safe drinking water is essential for the health and well-being of our communities," said Governor Cooper. "This funding will help ensure that all North Carolinians have access to the clean water they need, now and in the future."

The grants were awarded through the State Water Infrastructure Authority's Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) program. The DWSRF program provides low-interest loans and grants to communities for drinking water infrastructure projects. Since its inception, the program has invested over $2 billion in drinking water infrastructure upgrades across North Carolina.

The projects funded by this round of grants include:

  • A new water treatment plant in the town of Apex, which will increase capacity and improve water quality.
  • Pipeline upgrades in the city of Winston-Salem, which will reduce leaks and improve reliability.
  • A new water quality monitoring system in the county of Mecklenburg, which will provide real-time data on water quality.

These projects will significantly improve the drinking water infrastructure in North Carolina and help ensure that all residents have access to clean, safe water.
